When Artist Marina Abramovic Meets Ex-Lover After 30 Years
Warning: This will make you cry your eyes out. Artist Marina Abramovic was doing a live art performance that consisted of spending one minute of silence with a complete stranger. Then her ex-lover Ulay turned up – the first time that they had seen each other after 30 years.
Serbian Marina Abramovic and Ulay started an intense love affair in the 70’s. When they ended their relationship they decided to walk the Great Wall of China each from one end, meeting for one last embrace in the middle. That was the last time they saw each other. In 2010 as part of her introspective, “The Artist Presents” at New York’s Museum of Modern Art, Marina Abramovic sitting in the museum’s atrium, invited crowds of viewers to sit directly opposite her, in silent dialogue. As she shared a moment of silence with each stranger who sat in front of her, on opening night Ulay arrived without Marina knowing… And this is what happened.
Marina Abramović was no stranger to challenging performances. By the time that MoMA staged the retrospective, the then 63-year-old artist had engaged in countless taxing exhibitions, earning her self-given title, “the grandmother of performance art.” This video is so very powerful and touching. It just goes to show that once you have loved someone so deeply, your heart never forgets…
